Over The Line

otl-header

On Saturday, the  3rd annual Over The Line tournament took place in Phoenix.  OTL is a 3-man sport that’s somewhat like baseball.  The sport has been adapted for people in wheelchairs.  Each team tries to score runs by advancing ghost runners around the bases.  The event was held in the parking lot of the North Phoenix Baptist Church.  This year eight teams participated, and there was a 2nd event for youths using a wiffle ball.

The sport allows you to photograph up close but unfortunately in a tournament like this, the backgrounds arent too pleasing.  So I got a lot of experience looking for photo opportunities that didnt include j-johns and trash cans in the background.

I had to leave before I got the rosters, but I’ll add the teams, rosters, and winners pretty quick. More photos are inside article.

Swinging a bat while sitting is tough as you cant rotate your hips to get your back arm in full motion. This guy's chair has him almost standing and so he could rotate for a nice swing.

This photo looks as if the ball is smacking him in the face.

Definitely the most intense player, this guy made for alot of good shots.

One of the better shots I got with respect to a clean background.

Aside from the Over The Line Tournament, was a wiffle ball tournament which included some colorful players.

I hear Ken Griffey Jr is a royal pain to photograph. Fortunately his look-alike in today's Over The Line Tournament wasn't so egotistical.

This guy was a rolling highlight shot waiting to happen. He would come close to tipping over or flying out of the chair on every play.

I wish all the players had a license plate like Owen so I knew I was getting the photo credits right.

Gary Hershey sponsored the Over The Line Tournament. From the look, this could have been a home run.

I got the laces of the ball sharp and its a nice contrast with gray background. Too bad its a j-john!!

I liked shooting the wiffle ball players because they had bright blues and yellows.

This is a pretty tight crop, but the guy made a helluva great catch. Willie Mays style.

Another home run look.

Here's the problem with Nikon's D300. The red in that bat is totally blown out. I'd love to shoot in vibrant mode but even in standard, reds lose all their texture.

Dave Martin reminds me of a rolling fire hydrant. The guy has forearms like my calves.

Gary Hershey at bat. This was an early morning shot so the sun was as intense, and the shadows worked better. This angle was about the best for get players in background.

This is the shot I was looking for all day. I wanting to get the ball framed in the center, an intense look, and somewhat of a nice background.

All in all, it was a fun event and came away with some good photos. Next weekend is the Desert Challenge Games in Mesa. Its gonna be hot!
